A call box is the intercom panel mounted at a building's front door or vehicle gate. It has a speaker, a keypad, and a directory of resident names or unit codes. A visitor finds your listing and presses call. The box then places a phone call to the number on file for your unit. You answer, talk to them, and press a key on your phone to unlock the door.
That's the whole idea. A call box is a telephone that only dials residents, bolted to a wall, wired to a door lock. Everything else, the metal faceplate, the tiny scrolling screen, the worn-out buttons, is packaging.
What is a call box, and how is it different from a buzzer or intercom?
In practice, these words all mean the same thing. "Call box," "buzzer," "intercom," "door station," "entry panel," and "telephone entry system" get used interchangeably by renters, property managers, and delivery drivers.
If there's a technical distinction worth knowing, it's this:
- A true intercom is a closed loop. The panel is hardwired to a handset inside your apartment. There's no phone company involved. Old buildings often still have these.
- A call box (or telephone entry system) dials out over a phone line to a number stored in the building's directory. That number can be a landline, a cell phone, or a virtual number.
The second type is far more common in buildings built or renovated in the last 30 years. Brands you'll see on the faceplate include Mircom, TekTone, Linear, DoorKing, and Enterphone. If you want the deeper mechanics, we wrote a full apartment buzzer guide that walks through the panel, the phone line, and the unlock signal. To check whether your own call box can work with Enterkey, see does Enterkey work with your apartment call box.
This matters more than it used to. Zillow's Consumer Housing Trends Report 2024 found that about 32% of renters live in a multifamily building with at least 25 units. Bigger buildings mean shared front doors, and shared front doors mean a call box between you and every guest, courier, and dog walker you'll ever have.
What is a call box number?
Confusingly, "call box number" can mean two different things. Both matter, and mixing them up causes most missed deliveries.
- Your directory codeThis is the two-, three-, or four-digit number a visitor types on the keypad to reach you. Sometimes it matches your unit number. Often it doesn't: building 4B might be code 041, or 217, or something assigned when the system was installed. This is the number you should put in the "buzzer code" or "entry code" field when you order food or a package. Guessing wrong means the driver reaches your neighbor, or nobody.
- The phone number the box dialsBehind your directory code sits a phone number in the building's programming. When a visitor presses call, the box dials that number. If it still points to a landline you cancelled, or a roommate who moved out in 2022, the call goes nowhere and you never hear it.
Only your property manager or the company that services the panel can change that second number. You can't do it from the keypad. That's not a limitation of any app: it's how these systems are built.
How do you use an apartment call box?
As a visitor:
- Look for the resident directory. Some panels list names, some list only unit codes, some have a scroll button and a small screen.
- Type the code, then press the call or bell button. On some panels you press a key first, then the code.
- Wait. The call can take 10–20 seconds to connect, especially on older analog lines. People give up too early constantly.
- Speak when you hear a click or a voice.
- When the door clicks or buzzes, pull it open right away. Most locks release for only about five seconds.
As a resident, you answer the call on whatever phone the box dials and press the unlock digit. It's usually 9, sometimes 6, sometimes 0, occasionally *. Every building is different. If you've never tested yours, ask a friend to buzz you and find out before you actually need it.
What about gate call boxes?
A gate call box works the same way as a door one, with two practical differences.
First, it's usually a pedestal box at car height, in a driveway or parking entrance. Drivers reach out the window to use it. Second, gate boxes are often the only entry point for a whole complex, so a single dead directory entry can strand a moving truck.
Many gate boxes also offer a keypad code: a shared entry code residents give out. Those codes get passed around endlessly, written on delivery apps, and shouted across parking lots. Convenient, not exactly secure. If your gate box dials out to a phone number, you have a better option than a code everyone in the neighborhood knows.
Why do call boxes fail so often?
Because they were designed for a world where everyone had a landline and someone was always home. The common failure points:
- The stored number belongs to a disconnected line or a previous tenant.
- You're on a call, in a meeting, in a tunnel, or asleep, so the buzz just rings out.
- The driver types the wrong code, or the printed directory has faded.
- Audio is so bad you can't understand each other.
- You press 9 and nothing happens, because your building uses 6.
If your panel is dead rather than just inconvenient, our post on how apartment buzzers work covers what to check and what to ask maintenance.
Can a call box just let people in for you?
This is where Enterkey fits. Enterkey gives you a unique virtual phone number. You ask your property manager to point your call box entry at that number instead of your old one: a two-minute change on their end, usually done within a day. No hardware, no rewiring, no new panel. Here's how it works in more detail.
After that, you decide what happens when someone buzzes:
- Turn on a timed key, 5 minutes to 12 hours, and Enterkey answers the buzz and lets your visitor in automatically. Good for a delivery window, a cleaner, or a party where you'd otherwise be up and down all night.
- Give out a PIN that can be typed or spoken at the panel, instead of a shared gate code.
- Set a recurring weekly schedule for the dog walker.
- Leave keys off and let the buzz forward to your phone like a normal call.
- Share access with roommates through an invite link, so nobody's the designated door person.
Honest limits: Enterkey is iOS only right now. It needs your property manager to update the number in the panel: we can't do that part for you. And if your building uses a true hardwired intercom that only rings an in-unit handset, there's no phone number to redirect, so Enterkey won't work. If you're unsure which type you have, email support@enterkey.app with a photo of your panel. Real people answer, usually within hours.
Worth trying?
If your call box rings a number you can't reliably answer, that's not a you problem: it's a 1990s design meeting a 2020s schedule. Enterkey turns the same panel into something that opens the door on your terms, without waiting for a building-wide upgrade that may never come. It's $9.99/month or $69.99/year, and new members get their first month free: cancel before it ends and you pay nothing.
