Apartment Intercom Not Working? What to Check First

Why does an apartment intercom stop working?

An intercom looks like one device, but it is really a chain. The lobby panel takes a name or code. A board inside the building translates that into a phone call. The call travels over the building's phone line to whatever number is on file for your unit. Your phone rings. You press a key. A tone goes back down the line and releases the door strike.

Break any link and the whole thing looks dead. That is why "the intercom is broken" can mean five different problems. We walk through the full chain in our apartment buzzer guide, but here is the short version of what fails most:

• The directory is staleYour unit still lists the tenant from 2019, so visitors dial a number that no longer exists.
• The number on file is a disconnected landlineCommon in older buildings that were wired for in-unit phone service.
• Your phone is the problemDo Not Disturb, a spam filter, or a blocked unknown caller will kill the buzz silently.
• The panel hardware is failingDead keypad buttons, a cracked speaker, water in the enclosure.
• The line or board is downRare, but it takes the whole building out at once, a useful clue.

What should you check before calling the property manager?

Do this in order. It takes about ten minutes and it saves you a week of back-and-forth.

1. Test it yourselfWalk out to the panel and buzz your own unit. Does the keypad backlight come on? Do you hear a dial tone or ringing through the speaker? Does your phone ring? Note exactly where it stops. "Nothing happens when I press call" is a very different report than "it rings but the door never opens."
2. Try a neighbour's unitIf theirs works and yours does not, the panel and the line are fine: the problem is your entry. If nobody's works, the board or the phone line is down and that is a building-wide repair.
3. Check the directory listingRead the number or code shown next to your unit. Half the failed buzzes we hear about come from a visitor dialing an old three-digit code that was reassigned.
4. Check your phoneTurn off Do Not Disturb. Look in Settings for Silence Unknown Callers and switch it off. Check your blocked list: buzzer calls often come from an unfamiliar local number, and people block them by accident after one wrong-number call. Then check your recent calls for a missed one at the exact time you tested.
5. Confirm the unlock keyMany systems open the door when you press 9, some use 6, some use 0, and a few need you to stay on the line for a second after. If you have never been told which, ask. Pressing the wrong digit feels identical to a broken intercom.
6. Test the door itselfIf the buzz connects and you hear the tone but the door will not budge, the strike or the magnet is the culprit: a locksmith or maintenance job, not a phone problem.

Write down what you found before you email anyone. A message that says "panel lights up, neighbour's unit rings, mine goes straight to a fast busy signal" gets fixed far faster than "intercom broken."

When is it worth replacing the intercom instead of repairing it?

Sometimes the honest answer is that the intercom works fine and the phone system behind it does not. Old buildings were built around a landline in every unit. Almost nobody has one now. So the intercom dutifully dials a number that has not existed for years, and every visitor stands outside pressing a button that goes nowhere.

The cost of that is real. Security.org's 2023 Package Theft Report found roughly one in four Americans had a package stolen, and apartment and condo residents were hit hardest. When a driver cannot get in, your parcel gets left in a lobby, tossed behind a planter, or returned to the depot with a note you never see.

Replacing the panel is a capital project. Wiring, permits, a board approval, months of waiting. If your building is doing that anyway, great. If not, there is a cheaper path: leave the hardware alone and change where the call goes.

That is what Enterkey does. You get a unique virtual phone number. You ask your property manager to point your unit's buzzer at that number instead of the old one, usually a five-minute change on their end, often done within a day. No hardware, no rewiring, no drilling. It works with any buzzer system that dials out to a phone number, including most standard call box panels.

The important limit, stated plainly: if your intercom is hardwired to an in-unit handset and never places a real phone call, Enterkey cannot help. Neither can any app. That system needs new hardware. It is also iOS only right now, and it depends on your property manager updating the number on file. If they refuse, nothing else in the app matters.

How does routing the buzzer to an app actually fix things?

Once the buzz reaches software instead of a dead landline, a few problems disappear at once.

You can turn on a timed key, anywhere from five minutes to twelve hours, and Enterkey answers the buzz and lets the visitor in automatically. Nobody has to be near a phone. That covers the classic failure where the driver buzzes while you are on a work call, or the cleaner arrives before you are home.

You can hand out a PIN that the visitor types or speaks at the panel, so a dog walker or a contractor gets in without calling you. You can set recurring weekly schedules for the same Tuesday cleaning or Thursday grocery drop. Roommates and family share one setup through an invite link, which ends the "who's got the buzzer tonight" argument.

And when no key is active, the buzz forwards to your phone like a normal call, so nothing is lost. If forwarding is the part you are still puzzling over, we broke it down in how buzzer forwarding actually works.

There is also an activity log, so you can see whether a driver really buzzed before marking your package "delivered."

What if the panel itself is genuinely broken?

Then no software fixes it. If the keypad is dead, the speaker is blown, or the board is fried, that is a maintenance request. Put it in writing, include the date you tested, and ask for a timeline. Keep a copy. For wiring, power and worn-panel causes, see apartment buzzer not working: fixes. In most jurisdictions a working entry system is part of the building's basic upkeep, and a written record helps if you need to escalate.

While you wait, a temporary workaround: ask a neighbour if you can be listed as a secondary contact, or leave delivery instructions in the app you order from. Neither is elegant. Both beat missing a week of parcels.

Is Enterkey worth trying?

If your intercom is technically fine but pointed at a number nobody answers, Enterkey fixes exactly that, without waiting for a building-wide upgrade. It is $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year (about $5.83 a month); see pricing for details. New members get their first month free and can cancel before it ends and pay nothing.
