Small businesses in residential buildings

Plenty of small businesses run out of an apartment: a private tattoo studio, a tutor with after-school students, an esthetician with a treatment room, a photographer with one very good corner of light. They all share a weak point, which is a building entrance that expects the owner to be free to answer a phone.

Clients judge you at the entrance

The first thirty seconds of an appointment happen before anyone reaches you: somebody standing at a panel, checking a unit number against a text, pressing a button and waiting. If that press goes unanswered or the call drops, the appointment starts badly and the review tends to mention it.

Your booking software already tells clients when to turn up. Putting the entrance on those same hours makes arrival the boring part of the visit that it ought to be. If the panel is unfamiliar territory, the apartment buzzer guide covers what it is and how it reaches you.

Business hours as a standing window

Set a schedule across the hours you take appointments and add a code to it. Clients arriving in those hours say or type the code at the panel and come up. Outside them the buzzer forwards to your phone, and your home stops being a shop.

Print the code on the confirmation your booking system already sends, next to the unit number. A client who has it before they leave the house is a client who does not text you from the sidewalk.

A greeting instead of a text message

The welcome message plays a short line you wrote in a voice you chose: the studio name, the floor, which door. For a first-time visitor, hearing where to go beats reading it with a coffee in one hand.

It is a one-time $4.99 purchase, rewritable as often as you like, and it unlocks for everyone in your group, so a second practitioner working the same space gets it as well.

How it works, step by step

  1. Put your opening hours on the entrance

Create a schedule for the days and hours you take clients. Tuesday to Saturday, 11:00 to 19:00, is one decision instead of forty separate interruptions.

  2. Gate it with a code

Add a PIN so the window belongs to booked clients rather than to anyone who presses your unit number during business hours.

  3. Put the code in the confirmation

Add the digits and the unit number to the automated confirmation your booking tool already sends. Nothing else about the booking flow changes.

  4. Record two sentences of greeting

Who you are and where to go. Clients hear it at the panel, so a first-time visitor gets the floor and the door in your own words instead of digging a text back out of their phone.

  5. Read the day off the log

The activity log shows the time of each entry and which schedule or key opened the door, which is a rough attendance record for the day with no admin at all.

Frequently asked questions

I have staff. Can they let clients in as well?

Yes. Shared access puts your staff in the same group on the one subscription: everyone gets the buzzer calls, and anyone can arm a key or edit a window. There is no per-seat pricing.

What about walk-ins?

A walk-in without the code reaches you the way anyone would: they press your unit, and outside a window the call forwards to your phone. If you want walk-ins to have a path in during opening hours, run the schedule without a code and accept that the window is then open to whoever presses the button.

Most home-based businesses go the other way and keep the code, because appointments are the whole model.

Can I let one client in after hours?

Arm a single key for the length of that appointment. Durations run from five minutes to twelve hours, or permanent with a PIN, so a late Thursday session never means touching your business-hours window.

Does my landlord need to be involved?

The one setup step is a change to your unit's directory entry so it points at your Enterkey number, which a property manager makes once. Whether you can run your particular business from the unit is a separate question between you, your lease and your municipality.

A first-time client should find the right floor without texting you from the sidewalk.
