A gate call box is the keypad and speaker unit at a community entrance. A visitor finds your name in the directory or dials your code, and the box places a phone call to the number stored for your unit. You answer, talk, then press a digit to open the gate. If your box can dial a cell phone, Enterkey can answer that call for you automatically.
What is a gate call box, and how does it dial out?
A gate call box is a telephone entry system in a weatherproof box. Inside it there are four parts that matter: a directory of resident names and codes, a keypad and speaker, a phone connection, and a relay wired into the gate operator.
When a visitor scrolls to your name and presses call, the box looks up the number programmed for your unit and dials it over whatever line it has: an old copper line, a VoIP line, or more often now a cellular module. Your phone rings like any other call. When you press the unlock digit, usually 9, sometimes 6 or 0 depending on how the installer set it up, your phone sends a tone back down the call. The box hears that tone, closes the relay for a second or two, and the gate swings or slides open.
That is the whole trick. The gate does not know who you are. It only knows it received the right tone during an active call. Which also means the box does not care whether the phone it dialed is in your kitchen, in your pocket at work, or in another time zone. More detail on the hardware side lives in our guide to apartment call boxes.
Gated entries are not rare. The U.S. Census Bureau's American Housing Survey found that 5.9 percent of occupied households lived in a community surrounded by walls or fences, and 3.4 percent, about four million households, said access to their community was controlled by entry codes, key cards or a guard (American Housing Survey, 2001).
Entry codes or phone entry: which one does my gate use?
Most gated properties run two or three of these at once. Knowing which one a visitor is about to use saves a lot of phone tag.
- Directory call, also called phone entryThe visitor looks up your name and presses call. The box dials your number and you decide. This is the only method that needs you to be reachable.
- Resident gate codeA fixed PIN you punch into the keypad to open the gate yourself. The property manages it, not you, and it is usually shared by your whole household.
- Vendor or delivery codeA separate code given to landscapers, postal carriers or waste pickup. Some properties rotate these. Many never do, which is its own problem.
- Clicker or fobA radio remote for the car lane. Great for residents, useless for a courier on foot.
- Your directory number pointed at an appThe box still dials out, but it reaches a number that can answer and unlock on your behalf. Nothing at the gate changes.
The short version: codes work without you, phone entry does not. That gap is where missed deliveries happen. If you are not sure what your directory code is or where to find it, see what a buzz code is.
Why do gate call boxes miss people?
The hardware is usually fine. The phone call is the weak link.
The number on file is often years out of date, left over from a previous tenant. Call boxes frequently dial from an unfamiliar number, so your phone treats it as spam and silences it. Cell reception at a gate set back from the road can be poor. The box rings for a fixed window, often 20 to 30 seconds, then gives up. A driver with 40 stops left will not try twice. And if you are in a meeting, on a plane, or simply asleep, the call goes nowhere even when everything works.
How can a gate call box let someone in while you are out?
Enterkey gives you a unique phone number. Your property points the call box at it, and the app handles the call.
- Check the panel firstDoes the box dial a phone when someone presses your name? If it rings your cell or any outside number, it is compatible. If it is hardwired to a landline handset inside your unit, Enterkey cannot help.
- Set up the app and get your numberEnterkey is iOS only. You get your own virtual number inside the app. How it works walks through the whole flow.
- Ask your property manager or HOA to update the directory entryThis is a number change in the call box software, not a rewire. It is often done the same day.
- Test it from the gateWalk down, press your name, and confirm the app picks up and the gate opens.
- Turn on a key before the visitA timed auto-unlock key runs from five minutes to 12 hours, or Forever with a required PIN. While it is active, Enterkey answers the box and opens the gate without ringing you at all. When no key is active, the call forwards to your phone and you answer normally.
You can also give a visitor a PIN they type or speak at the panel, set a recurring weekly schedule for a cleaner or dog walker, and share access with everyone in the household by invite link. Every entry shows up in the activity log.
What should I send my property manager or HOA?
Keep it boring and specific. Managers approve boring requests faster.
Subject: Update the gate call box number for Unit 412
Hi [name], could you please update the phone number the gate call box dials for Unit 412? The new number is [your Enterkey number]. Nothing at the gate needs to be rewired or replaced, it is only a directory number change in the call box. I am happy to meet you at the gate to test it after the update. Thanks, [your name], Unit 412.
For couriers, put this in the delivery instructions field:
Gated entry. At the call box, select [your name] and press call. When the call connects, say or enter 1234 to open the gate. Leave the package at the door.
What Enterkey will not do
Honesty beats a surprise. Enterkey is iOS only, so an Android household member cannot run the app, though they can still use a PIN at the panel. It works only with boxes that dial out to a phone number, so systems wired directly to an in-unit landline handset are out. It cannot create or change the keypad codes your property controls, and it cannot open a gate that is fob only with no call function. And the change does depend on your property manager updating one field, which most will do within a day once you ask.
If your gate call box keeps ringing a phone nobody answers, Enterkey turns it into something that just opens. It is $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year, and new members get their first month free. Cancel before the month ends and you pay nothing. Questions go to real people at support@enterkey.app, usually answered within hours.
